Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at the Age of 89.

This Academy Award-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran has died at the age of 89.

This actress, with roles included Chinatown, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. The news was shared via an announcement shared by her daughter, award-winning actress Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who starred with her mother in several movies like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, called her “my amazing hero plus my precious gift being my mom”, stating that she was by her side when she passed.

“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative and compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were lucky to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Initial Roles and Breakthrough

The start of her career featured supporting roles in television programs such as Perry Mason whereas that decade had her appearing with Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

That very year, 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. The performance landed Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

In the 1980s, she was seen in the dramatic film Black Widow plus comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a comedy program based on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she earned a further best supporting actress nomination for her role in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the parent of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. A year later she obtained a further nomination for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred her daughter.

“This movie that Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew us to England for a special screening and a party in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”

The 1990s featured performances in comedy The Cemetery Club bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom another time. That period also earned her TV award nominations for roles on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing with Laura Dern in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire and White’s satirical show Enlightened. She also appeared next to Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her more recent television parts included Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.

Behind the Camera

She additionally penned and helmed the comedy film Mrs Munck featuring her and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a great actor,” she said. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. Back in 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with lung disease and told her life expectancy was six months but made a full recovery when her daughter moved her to a new hospital.
