Keith Baker and Keith Baker Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master Academy
Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been organizing immersive events where professional dungeon masters manage fantasy roleplaying games in historic castles in the UK and at a U.S. castle resort. The full-service getaways are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who seldom have the moment to participate as players themselves, and they often ask for tips from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improvisation and crafting riddles to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.
In response, the planners began designing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The debut workshop is scheduled for January 2-3, 2026 at a university in Atlanta.
“You can watch countless online tutorials on almost every theme and gain significant knowledge, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to a live, hands-on session alongside other dungeon masters, where real-time interaction with faculty instructors and your peers likely in the same boat and seek to enhance their abilities,” stated the program's dean.
Available Classes and Cost Levels
DMs can select options ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to $2.5K, based on the level of access they desire with the experts. The base tier includes one of four courses:
- Core Techniques: Teaches the essentials of running D&D.
- Story Arc Development: Centers on designing extended campaigns.
- Setting Creation: Highlights the development of worlds.
- Industry Advancement: Designed for DMs who aim to explore more about the tabletop profession.
Every class includes two days of instruction divided across 48 hours.
“The courses are structured so that you depart having usable skills, probably greater confidence, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl noted. “These aren't simple talks and they go beyond recorded content. These are sessions that you can participate in, gain knowledge from, and then go right back home the next week and implement in your local game.”
Seasoned Educators
The majority of workshops are led by two professors. Universe creation is guided by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, both teaching the skill of universe design.
Industry advancement presents multiple instructors, such as Elisa Teague, an entertainment professional, and Hunter Fell. The expanded teaching staff is meant to deliver focused advice to participants with definite objectives.
“Various attendees plan to create their own D&D actual play and present their narratives with the world, others aim to release and write original content,” Carl said. “Others simply wish to ask, What does it take to be a DM at something like a castle event? What are the skills that I need? Can anyone do it?”
Premium Packages
A fifteen hundred dollar enhanced option offers access to a opening gathering, a starter kit, and a brief one-on-one appointment with one of the faculty. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the team has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their immersive experiences.
“It would be possible to organize an entire weekend just on one-on-one meetings for expert DMs,” Carl mentioned. “I'm not certain if that’s the most effective utilization of each attendee's hours – I believe the coursework and the hands-on activities is too valuable – but I suspect it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The $2,500 platinum tier includes an 60-minute private session and the chance to run a game for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then offer feedback and instruction.
“The purpose is for the instructor to review whichever aspect is concerned with: I struggle with improvisation or I get blocked in specific fight encounters. Can I run a scene for you and get feedback on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl said. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and information on a definite universe that they’ve been creating.”
Future Plans
Input from the debut workshop will help guide subsequent DMU events. Carl said that likely modifications could include adding more office hours, making it longer to a longer period, or experimenting with varied class arrangements.
“I hope that we conduct these regularly,” Carl expressed. “I would love to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in various locations, and in multiple countries. The reception has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to organize these in collaboration with major events.”
