The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
